One of only a handful of wines to receive Parker’s perfect score — and many who have tasted it recently believe the 1986 may ultimately surpass even the legendary 1982. A powerful and intense bouquet of exemplary graphite and cedar, a touch of black pepper and incense that unfurls in the glass like a motor revving its engine; the palate is beautifully balanced with trademark firm tannic structure — layers of black fruit intermingling with mint and graphite, a hint of licorice, fanning out to an incredibly long finish. At nearly 40 years of age it has achieved an ethereal lightness while delivering concentration — all the classic Bordeaux notes delivered in proportions of perfect harmony, with fine-grained tannins now softened and integrated. The nose reveals nuts and prunes made complex by toffee, rancio, peppery spice, and cedarwood. The label was designed by British abstract expressionist Bernard Cohen. Now at or approaching its peak — but with decades still ahead. Decant 3–4 hours minimum. Drink now–2045.
